SOY Academy · Academic Tutoring

Help with tonight's homework, and with the gap behind it.

One-on-one tutoring in math, science, and reading and writing. We match your student with a tutor for their subject and grade, figure out what's behind the wrong answers, and build the study habits that keep them from falling behind again.

No obligation, and no pressure to sign up. It's just a conversation about your student.

Why it matters early

Most learning gaps aren't about ability. They're about a missing step.

Math, reading, and science all build on themselves. If a skill didn't quite click last year, this year's material is built right on top of it. That's why a struggle rarely stays in one unit.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (The Nation's Report Card), 2024 reading and mathematics results, National Assessment Governing Board. Rounded.

If your student is struggling, they're far from alone. In 2024, about one in three U.S. 8th graders scored below the basic level in reading, and nearly two in five did in math. Gaps are common. The trouble starts when a gap is left alone, because every new unit assumes the last one made sense.

Of course, national numbers can't tell you about your own student, and tutoring doesn't guarantee an A. The first few sessions show us where things start to break down, so the rest of the time goes where it's needed.

What we tutor

A tutor who knows the subject and the grade level.

Math

Number sense, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and beyond, with extra care on the basics that later courses depend on.

Science

Understanding why things work instead of memorizing terms, so labs, problem sets, and tests start to make sense.

Reading & Writing

Reading comprehension, essay structure, and getting a good idea down on paper clearly.

Something else?

Ask during the free consult. If we don't have the right tutor, we'll tell you before you book anything.

The SOY difference

Grades depend on more than what a student knows.

Research keeps finding that one-on-one tutoring is one of the most effective ways to help students learn.1 But what happens between sessions matters too. Planning, routines, and confidence all show up on the report card.

That's why our tutors look at the whole picture, not only the worksheet in front of them.

Planning and organization

Knowing what's due and when, and breaking big projects into smaller steps before they turn into a Sunday-night scramble.

Study habits that stick

A routine a student can keep running on their own, so progress doesn't stop the moment a session ends.

"I'm just bad at this"

That belief can hold a student back for years. Small wins in the exact spot they struggle are what start to change it.

Nerves before tests

Practicing under test-like conditions and knowing what to do when a question goes badly, so one hard problem doesn't throw off the whole test.

The rest of the week

Sports, activities, family, other classes. We work around the schedule your student actually has.

Asking for help

Knowing when to go to a teacher and what to say. It's a skill that lasts long after tutoring ends.

How it fits together

The subject, and the student learning it.

A 5th grader who's quietly lost in fractions and a high schooler who understands chemistry but waits until the night before to study need very different things. Each one gets their own plan.

In every session

Rebuilding understanding from the ground up

  • Finds the real gap in a student's thinking, not just which answer was wrong
  • Works from what the class is covering now — bring the homework, the test, the teacher's feedback
  • Fills in earlier material that's getting in the way
  • Practice that checks understanding, not just finished worksheets
Where your student needs it

Habits and confidence around it

  • Planning, organization, and time management for a real school week
  • Study routines a student can run on their own
  • Confidence that doesn't collapse after one bad quiz
  • A rematch if the tutor fit isn't right

Some of our tutors have earned Executive Function Coaching and Social-Emotional Learning badges based on student feedback. If that matters most to you, mention it during the consult and we'll match your student with one of them.
