An open session on how to prepare for and apply to medical school, led by SOY Academy mentors who are current students at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Built for our undergraduate volunteers and open to any UVA undergraduate who is thinking about medicine. The kickoff for this year’s series: the whole road in one evening, before we take each stretch of it in turn.
What we’ll cover:
The timeline — What to be doing in each year of undergrad, when to take the MCAT, and when applying “early” actually matters.
Prerequisites and the MCAT — Which courses count, how to plan them around your major, and how to study without burning out.
Clinical and volunteer experience — What committees look for in your hours, and why showing up consistently beats collecting titles.
The personal statement — How to find the story that is already yours, and how to write it so it sounds like you.
Interviews and decisions — What an interview day is like, how to prepare, and what to do with a waitlist.
Open questions — Gap years, reapplying, cost, picking a school: all fair game.
Questions:
Do I need to be a SOY Academy volunteer to come? — No. The session was planned with our volunteers in mind, but it’s open to any UVA undergraduate who is curious about medicine.
Where is it? — We’re confirming the room now. RSVP by email and we’ll send the location as soon as it’s set. It will be in Charlottesville, near Grounds.
Can I bring a friend? — Please do. Just have them RSVP too so we can plan for the room.
